Successful Solidarity Bingo will allow 50 vulnerable families to replace dirt floors with concrete floors

San Pedro Sula. Habitat for Humanity Honduras successfully held its Solidarity Bingo, a day of participation and social commitment that raised the funds needed to replace dirt floors with concrete floors in 50 homes of families in vulnerable conditions.

The event, with the participation of more than 800 people and the solidarity support of around 120 companies and institutions, is part of Habitat Honduras’ efforts to improve the quality of life of those who need it most and reduce the serious housing deficit facing the country. Currently, 61.8% of Honduran households – equivalent to more than 1.6 million – live in precarious conditions.

According to INE’s Population and Housing Census, more than 585,000 homes in Honduras have dirt floors. This reality directly affects more than 2 million people, who are exposed to greater risks of respiratory, dermatological and gastrointestinal diseases, especially due to the constant presence of dust in the home.

A Habitat for Humanity study shows that replacing dirt floors with concrete floors not only improves sanitary conditions, but also reduces health expenses by 79%, increases families’ financial stability by 20%, and helps children miss 15% less school. These changes have a tangible impact on the physical, economic and emotional well-being of the beneficiary households.

The Solidarity Bingo, led by Habitat Honduras’ volunteer group “Women Build”, not only offered entertainment and prizes for participants, but also reaffirmed the commitment of this organization and its partner companies and institutions to build a country where everyone has a suitable place to live.
