Twelve families in La Ceiba now own their own home

La Ceiba, May 18, 2024.

Given the existing housing deficit in Honduras, which is around 61.9%, Habitat for Humanity continues to work to facilitate access to adequate housing for the Honduran population.

In this regard, this Saturday, May 18, Habitat delivered 12 social housing units to an equal number of previously selected families, who will live in the “Proyecto Habitacional Xochimilco”, located in the neighborhood of the same name, in La Ceiba, Atlántida.

This project, built on a 240 square meter lot, was executed with an investment of 8 million 200 thousand lempiras, and will allow the families not only to have adequate housing, but also to own their own property.

The construction process, which began on February 14, involved the beneficiary families themselves, as part of the process of community involvement.

The size of each of the homes delivered is 48 square meters; they have two bedrooms, living room, kitchen, dining room, bathroom and access to drinking water, thermal insulation to mitigate high temperatures, electricity and street lighting, to ensure the proper functioning of the community.

The Xochimilco Housing project is part of Habitat’s global vision, which to date has built more than 40 thousand housing solutions during its more than 30 years of presence in Honduras, where according to reports from the National Institute of Statistics (INE) updated to 2023, there are 2 million 544 thousand 629 homes and 2 million 613 thousand 199 households, of which 9.4% are in overcrowded conditions.

This housing gap poses enormous challenges, especially for families living in poverty and ethnic communities, populations that are traditionally the most disadvantaged.

In this sense, Habitat serves these segments of the population with an investment of more than 205 million lempiras per year for the past 15 years. This has been possible thanks to volunteers, alliances with 276 local governments and multiple partners and networks of organizations.
